Weeki Wachee Weekend

Several months ago I learned of a little place called Weeki Wachee Springs the home of the one and only Weeki Wachee Mermaids.  Of course as a Mom of two daughters, mermaids are a big deal!  Weeki Wachee Springs is somewhat on the way to where Mike's Grandma & Aunt live in The Villages.  (Florida's Friendliest Hometown) Every year his Aunt hosts a big family party to celebrate Grandma's Birthday.  This weekend she turned 92!  Mike & I decided to make the most of our gas money and the weekend by combining the two trips.  Saturday morning we loaded up the car and set out to experience a  slice of Florida's history at Weeki Wachee Springs.

Weeki Wachee Springs is just one of the 700 fresh water springs in Florida but Weeki Wachee is the only fresh water spring with a Mermaid Theater.  Established in 1947,  this park has quite an amazing history.  Click this link to read more about how the Springs were discovered, named and how these talented Mermaids came to be.

Weeki Wachee Springs officially became a State Park in 2001.  Here's one of the peacocks that roams the grounds.  I hope now that this beautiful historic park has government funding that it will always be open for future generations to enjoy.

The Weeki Wachee River water is crystal clear and always *72 degrees!  Picture perfect!

Cruising on the River... we were hoping to see a manatee but no luck... just birds, turtles and fish.

So excited to see Mermaids, the girls can hardly contain their excitement!

WOW!  These Mermaids make swimming 20 ft under water effortless!  The first show we saw was "Fish Tales" the story of Weeki Wachee Springs & the Mermaids.

After each show a Mermaid was by the gift shop to meet and greet all the visitors!  The second show we saw was Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid.

The Mermaid Princess falling in love with a ship wrecked human.

The Sea Witch offers the Princess a trade so she can join her prince.  Her voice for human legs... come on you all know the story.

The Mermaid Princess, her sisters and her Prince must defeat the evil Sea Witch.

The Mermaid Princess gets her voice, her legs and her Prince!  They all of course live happily ever after!

What a fabulous day!  Maddy & Mikayla absolutely LOVED seeing and meeting the Mermaids.  In fact Maddy told us she wants to go to Weeki Wachee every Saturday!  Mike & I really enjoyed ourselves too.  It was a very relaxing couple hours that brought smiles to all of our faces.

After we left Weeki Wachee Springs, we checked into the Best Western right around the corner.  Our room had a comfy king size bed, a jacuzzi tub and a 32" flat screen tv!  We took the girls out for a yummy pizza dinner at Giordano's and then it was back to the hotel for a jacuzzi bath and a movie!

I haven't been there since we were kids. I have been wanting to go back as an adult. How long a drive is it? Thanks for bringing us there again! Nice photos!

Thanks Lyndsey! It took about 2 hours and 15 minutes. The GPS sent us up 275 and the Veterans Expressway. They call it the Nature Coast up there and I can see why, it was really pretty! It was not expensive to get in either. $13 for adults, $5 for kids 5 and up, free for kids 5 and under.

Even though we live somewhat close to there, I've never been! One of these days we'll have to check it out, although I'm not sure that Cam will be as excited to see mermaids as the girls were!
